I was quite happy to take this Bennington Buccaneer on consignment because this is one of the better options for two wheel carriages out there. These carriages are sturdy, stable adaptable, and attractive. The Buccaneer is a traditional looking carriage that is highly functional.

The balance of the carriage can be adjusted by changing the mount position of the torsion bar suspension. There are 6 positions; here it is seen in the furthest back position. Additionally, the height of the shafts can be varied with adjustments for three different positions. Here the shafts are shown in their middle position. The shafts of the Buccaneer can be removed with relative ease, which gives you a great deal of flexibility when it comes to transporting the carriage.

The Buccaneer is a suitable carriage for a broad range of tasks. The ease of entry makes it a comfortable recreational driving carriage. It is a good choice for someone driving at club drives, and local or national pleasure driving shows. It will serve well in dressage and cones in combined driving, and can take a training or preliminary level driver through the marathon safely.

This carriage was built in 1998. It is in good condition with expected, but not excessive wear for a 12 year old carriage. There are tool marks on the brass hubs, but no other obvious or large dents, scratches or dings. The wheels are made of aluminum. The seat is adjustable forward and back via sliding seat rails and a simple lever. This is a nice convenience for accommodating drivers of different sizes. This can also be used as a method for temporarily adjusting the balance of the carriage.

Below is a table of approximate measurements. We are not sending this carriage into outer space, so measuring to the last 1/100th of an inch isn’t really necessary. The measurements have been rounded to ¼ inch or ½ centimeter increments.

Track Width = 131.5cm ; 51.75 inches
Hub to Hub 136cm ; 53.5 inches
Wheel Size = 84cm ; 33 inches
Shaft Length* = 183cm ; 72 inches at their current setting, these shafts could be let out about 2.5 inches or shortened about 6 inches
Shaft Height* = 106.5cm ; 42 inches to bottom of tug these shafts can be attached at a lower or higher setting changing the height of the shaft by about 3 inches in either direction
Seat Width = 91.5cm ; 36 inches
Seat Height at bottom when level 109 cm ; 43 inches
Overall length with shafts * 325cm ; 128 inches
Body length without shafts *147cm 58 inches

Carriage Types

There are literally hundreds if not thousands of carriages of various types out there. What a carriage is identified as, and the class it gets put in, is often up to whom made the carriage. Today, in automotive terms, we have, vans, mini-vans, and SUV's. Since vans and mini-vans are becoming passé, auto makers try to come up with designs that cross into the SUV market. Carriages were, and still are, very similar. There are certain standard...

Safety, Care, & Maintenance

The sunshine and warm air is here for many of us, and on its way to others. The struggle of getting out to the barn and going for a drive doesn’t seem so hard now. As you pull that carriage and harness out you’ll want to make sure that they are in good working order. Take this time at the beginning of your driving season to assure the rest of your season goes smoothly. If you don’t have time to do it well right now, what makes y...

Measurements & Weights

From the American Driving Society Rules Book

1. Measurement - Weight

1.1 The track width is measured at ground level on the widest part of the rear wheels. The Rules governing the minimum and maximum track widths and the weights of vehicles for each class are laid down in the Rules for Competitions A, B and C.
1.2 Wheel hoops are not premitted in any of the competitions.
1.3 Competitors may h...

Time to give a new bit a try?

I often tell students that changing up the bit at a competition is usually a bad idea.  Generally it goes along the lines of "the devil you know".  However, with the competition season behind us, this is the time of the year that you can really experiment with bits.

One of the questions I am asked th...
