BUILDING A HALF-HALT
One of the most universal specific skills that is used across horsemanship is the half-halt. There is hardly a horse or horseman in the world that can’t benefit from a well established, balance building half-halt. I find that as I teach carriage drivers, dressage riders and trail riders, that I keep coming back to the fundamentals of a good half-halt. As that happens, I end up answering the same questions from those equestrians across the spectrum.
Some of my favorites:
- “Which rein do you want me to half-halt on?”
- “How long do you want me to hold the half-halt?”
- “Why would I let go of my horse if I want him to stop?”
Of course, I could go on, but that’s what the class is for. In the class I will teach you what a half halt really is, how to establish a half-halt, and when to use it. I’ll give you skill building exercises that you can take out and use the very next day with your own horse.
Some of the exercises I’ll be giving to you were handed to me more than 20 years ago, and I still use those skills every time I ride, long line or drive a horse! I think you’ll certainly carry something valuable away from this class.
