I have been doing a lot of 1-1 Private Online Coaching sessions recently. I always knew this would be a really useful learning tool, but honestly, I underestimated just how effective this would be! I’m so impressed with the progress my students are making within just a few sessions.
In some ways, the Online Coaching has some really big advantages over in person lessons. In the online setting, we’re able to focus primarily on specific topics without the horse dragging us into a another direction. We can the drill down further into what’s most important for the pony, and driver so we can make a plan to improve their driving.
I think the biggest advantage comes after the coaching session is done, because every student gets their own course page. Each session is recorded and posted to their page to review anytime they like. I share notes and give suggestions for follow up work right there on the same page. There’s also a section for posting follow up questions.
Everyone Could Use This
So often, as I’m sharing my instruction with my students there’s a thought lingering in the back of my mind: “I wish everyone could see and hear this.”
There are seldom any instructions that one person gets that another person couldn’t put to use equally effectively. In fact, sometimes it’s easier to learn something while you’re watching someone else learn it.
I keep asking myself, “How can I get this type of instruction in front of more students?”
I want your opinion on a brainstorm:
Iโm kicking around an idea of doing weekly, group coaching sessions. My idea is that weโd put more focus on you and your ponies in the โhere and nowโ aspect. Iโd be looking for video and/or photo submissions before the class. I’d pick a few pieces of video to focus on that I think will be the most useful for everyone.
You wouldnโt have to submit stuff to participate in the class. You could still sign up to learn alongside everyone else, and ask relevant questions. Sometimes that where some of the best input comes from.
These group coaching sessions would be a bit โlighterโ than the full online classes that typically have multiple class videos, lesson plans, articles and other downloads.
You’d still have access to a class page just like the ones that you get with the regular classes. That page would have the recorded coaching session, plus notes, suggested reading, and ideas of what to do with your ponies related to what we talked about. Any followup questions or progress reports could be shared right there on that class page.
That means if you couldn’t attend the live session, you’d still get to watch the class, and even ask questions after the fact. Cool, huh? 😎
We could also pick a subject each week, and riff on that in a little more free-form way than a formal class. My thought for the first session would a review of what you did last season with your ponies.
What do you think?
I’ve emailed Andy, but maybe someone here can help. I’ve signed up for the Group Coaching session tonight (Feb 21) but can not find the group coaching page? Or will he send me a link to a Zoom session? It says I have paid, but there is nothing in my courses. I’ve tried to look at the FAQ but no of them will open.
I’m interested in learning how to improve my Shetland’s lengthening. Little legs, do you think the judges are missing it?
Lengthening has more to do with what the body is doing than you think. It’s not just about the little legs.
I have some great exercises for lengthening. Start with Developing the Walk, then move on to Lengthening the Trot.
I’d be happy to cover this subject in our group lessons.
Sounds like an excellent way to get tips/help with driving or competing driving.
I think it’s a great idea! I have not actually driven a horse yet, but I do lots of ground and line driving. Being a part of this would probably help me a lot. I have a horse who was trained to drive and I have everything I need to drive, I just haven’t actually done it yet! I don’t really have a particular day or time that works best so I am pretty open at this point. Keep me in the loop please.
Hi, Andy, it sounds like a great idea. Any day works for me but 8 or 9 c time would be better for me. Keep me posted on how it goes.
Lots of people asked for Sundays, and lots asked for 7pm Est. I pushed it to 8pm (7c) to make it more reasonable for those to my west.
If that works for you, here’s the link Group Online Coaching
Sounds like a great idea. Go for it. Good luck with it, Andy.
This sounds like a great idea. Iโm open to any night, any time. Iโm in Aiken for the winter and able to drive a few different singles and a pair. They are all different and need different things so Iโm sure I could really benefit from lessons like this!
Iโd love a later class time (7 central) and day of the week isnโt important. I have enjoyed my 1-on-1 so far – I think my work with one of my horses has greatly improved – and I believe there is merit in group as well.
We are in 2nd spring here. To be followed in a few weeks by 3rd winter. Having just lost a week to solid rain and another week to waiting fir the mud to dry, anything driving/educational would be great.
Any night is open for me. The 6pm C is a preferred time. Are we limited to single pony/horse? Will pair driving be included at some point?
We certainly wouldn’t limit discussion to singles. Many of the discussions will apply equally to pairs as they do to singles. Specific questions regarding pairs will certainly be welcome.
Good idea. I’ve just been driving and haven’t fun in dry of working on stuff. Need to focus again.
Sounds very interesting.
Sunday nights would work for me.
Sunday night it is! Group Online Coaching
I’d be interested as long as I don’t have to supply video at this time of year. It’s been -4F for the past week, with windchill values close to -40 at times!
Haha! I think that for the first session or two we’ll be “looking back” at video that people have from this past season (or even before.) So, if you have any video of stuff you’ve already done, we can use that.
Of course, you can always sit back and enjoy the videos that other share
Canโt wait for these group lessons and any night would work. I loved the 1-1 lesson
