Description
If you and your horse have been successful in learning how to long line, this lesson plan is a great next step. It starts out simply by long lining through cones set out in a perfect square (which happens to put your horse on the pathway of a perfect circle!) Step by step, the cones are move so that your horse has to leave that pathway to maintain the pattern through the cones. The result is a wavy shaped circle, which is great for building lateral flexion and balance.
But there is so much more potential to this lesson plan. If you return to the circle after completing all 5 exercises, you’ll find your horse on the most rock-solid circle you’ve ever seen him on. Returning to the lesson plan will help your horse develop the coordination for bending, and you’ll have a much more developed outside rein.
Riders love this lesson plan for teaching the horse to move off the leg. If you expand the dimensions of the figure, you can use it while driving to make a fun, challenging exercise for bending. This certainly will take the “hum-drum” boredom out of endless circles in the ring.
