Description
I was fortunate enough to receive some sage advice when I was a young horse trainer:
“Any damn fool can make a horse trot, a good trainer can make a horse walk.”
This truth has served me well throughout my decades of training horses. The walk is the most fundamental gait in the horse’s movement. It creates the foundation that all of the horse’s other movements will be based upon.
That is the reason that all walk movement scores are counted as double for every dressage test below the advanced level. This scoring isn’t intended to be punitive, rather, it’s intended to reward the proper development of the horse’s movements. There truly is no better way to improve your dressage score than improving your horse’s walk.
The benefits go well beyond the dressage ring. Developing your horse’s walk will improve his rhythm, engagement, impulsion, and balance. Your horse will move with greater confidence and control no matter what you ask of him.
